RISANews

Welcome to the first issue of RISANews. We've been growing rapidly here at RISA; we've nearly doubled our staff in the last year and we have YOU to thank for that. Your support of our products enables us to develop new products and continually improve existing ones.

As we grow we're always looking for more efficient ways to communicate with our valued clients and this newsletter will be part of that. Let me know what you think of it. In my opinion all the smartest engineers use RISA software, so I'm very interested in what you have to say.

Sincerely,
Bruce R. Bates, President

RISAFoot Added to the RISA Building System

The new integration of RISAFoot with the RISA Building System (now in beta) gives you greater power to manage components of structural models from the top down to the foundation.RISAFoot Integration Model

As a stand-alone application, RISAFoot has earned its mark for its analysis and design features and ability to handle complex situations such as biaxial bending, uplift and property boundaries.

Now, when you work with RISAFoot in conjunction with RISA-2D, RISA-3D or RISAFloor, you're able to manage all project footings in the same model, and within the same environment as the super structure. No other software provides this much flexibility.

RISAFoot’s full integration within the RISA Building System brings productivity to a higher level. All loads are automatically applied and all footings are optimized at once. Changes can literally be handled in minutes rather than hours or days, letting you investigate more design options and helping you adjust on fast-track projects.

Whether you need to solve a single footing or all footings on the project, RISAFoot automates as much as possible.

  • Footing loads, criteria and column information are automatically determined from structural models built with RISA-2D, RISA-3D or RISAFloor.
  • Multiple footing results are tabulated in powerful spreadsheets with sorting and filtering.
  • Detailed foundation plans are automatically generated in seconds.

RISAFoot is the perfect choice for optimal results for your spread footings, eccentric pedestals and bounding property lines.

Good Vibrations: Do You DG 11?

AISC Design Guide 11 Using RISAFloor

One of the most overlooked serviceability criteria in today’s building designs are floor vibrations.RISAFloor DG 11 Vibration ResultsMost engineers don't have time to run lengthy vibration calculations, and many are using software with outdated methods.

See why RISA is leading the way and why most engineers choose us for integrated floor design and cutting-edge vibration analysis.

Using RISAFloor to Perform Cutting-Edge Vibration Analyses

With the long spans and lighter fit-out common in modern buildings, older methods for evaluating floor vibrations are no longer accurate. Some competing floor design programs still perform inaccurate vibration analyses using these methods—RISAFloor provides you with the tools to get it right!

RISAFloor implements AISC’s Design Guide 11 and automatically calculates floor framing accelerations and frequencies as a standard part of every design—no need to use an outside program or change “modules.” Vibration calculations are performed right along with strength checks and deflection calculations, giving the user complete access to the big picture without having to click on individual beams.

Coming Soon: RISAMasonry

Releasing December 2004, RISAMasonry offers a complete answer for analysis and design of masonry construction. RISAMasonry designs masonry walls, columns and beams (lintels) to the latest codes and includes a library of masonry units.

Version 1.0 addresses the working stress design of beams, columns, shear walls, in-plane and out-of-plane walls. In addition, it performs slender wall design using the iterative strength design method. Here are some of the key features of RISAMasonry:

Design Flexibility
RISAMasonry supports both the UBC 97 and MSJC 02 (ACI/ASCE/TMS) codes for working stress design and for strength design of slender walls.

The program will perform analysis and design on virtually any type of wall element whether it is in-plane or out-of-plane, reinforced or unreinforced, grouted, partially grouted, or ungrouted.

Both cracked and uncracked sectional analysis is performed for in-plane shear walls.

Library Of Common Masonry Units
RISAMasonry comes with a built in library of most commonly used masonry units. All you have to do is select your masonry unit and calculations for effective sections, areas and self weight will be performed automatically.

Results Presentation
The element detail report has been specifically designed for ease of use. It provides a pictorial representation of the element along with a distribution graph for shear and moments along the length of the element. In addition, this detail report contains input, intermediate values and final design values for the element.

Awards of Excellence

RISA-3D’s strong showing among this year’s winners of the AISC Engineering Awards of Excellence attest to its standing as one of the best structural engineering analysis and design programs in the market.

RISA was listed exclusively on three buildings that won Merit Award honors and was featured on five of the 11 projects recognized this year. Awarded by AISC, the Engineering Awards of Excellence recognize engineering excellence and innovation in steel-framed buildings. They were announced in April’s issue of Modern Steel Magazine. The following is a complete list of award winners that used RISA-3D:

$25M or greater, but less than $10M
National Winner (tied): Gerald Ratner Athletics Center, Chicago.
Merit Award (tied): Fisher Performing Arts Center, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York

$10M or greater, but less than $25M
Merit Award: Swonder Ice Area, Evansville, Indiana

Less than $10M
Merit Award: Reiman Gardens Conservatory Complex, Ames, Iowa
Merit Award: Branford Point Residence, Branford, Connecticut

Meet RISA

Dr. Umesh PuriIn this issue, we hear from Dr. Umesh Puri, the Director of Research and Development at RISA Technologies. Dr. Puri discusses a few projects he's working on to help RISA Technologies stay on the cutting edge and describes some of his daily duties and his field of expertise.

Q. What projects are you currently working on?
A.I'm working on the generator for automatic meshing of slab, beam, opening and column elements in the development of RISAFoundation, our new mat foundation software. I am also implementing foreign concrete codes, British, European, Canadian and Indian in particular, in RISA-3D, RISA-2D and RISAFloor."

Q. Describe your duties at RISA?

Analysis and design of pre and post-tensioned concrete construction (i.e. elevated slab, mat foundation and slab on grade). I also have experience in analysis and design of segmental constructed concrete bridges as well as the modeling of time and temperature effects on concrete.”

Q. What do you enjoy most about working at RISA?
A.
“The environment is really good. The management is well organized. The development team is very cooperative. The direction is very clear.”
